Lesson 1.1: Welcome to the Digital World

Let’s get started on our computer science adventure! In this first lesson, we’re putting on our detective hats to uncover the secret world of computers all around us.

What You’ll Learn

By the end of our adventure today, you’ll be able to:

  • Explain what a computer is in your own words.
  • Find at least 5 different computers hiding in plain sight.
  • Share one cool way that computers help us every day.
  • Show that you know how to be a responsible user of our classroom tech.

Our Mission for Today

Warm-Up Circle (10 minutes)

  • Let’s get to know each other!
  • We’ll brainstorm all the things that pop into your head when you hear the word “computer.”
  • We’ll go over the rules for using our cool classroom gadgets.

Main Adventure: Computer Detective Hunt! (25 minutes)

  • With a partner, you’ll grab a special “detective clipboard.”
  • Your mission: explore the classroom and school to find and jot down all the different computers you see.
  • Look for three types of clues: traditional computers (like laptops), smart devices (like phones), and hidden “embedded” computers (like in a microwave!).

Detective Debrief (10 minutes)

  • Let’s share all the amazing discoveries you made!
  • We’ll create a giant class chart to display all the computers we found.
  • Get a sneak peek at our next exciting lesson.

Tech Time (5 minutes)

  • A quick introduction to the tablets and computers we’ll be using.
  • We’ll practice how to handle them carefully and find our way around the screen.

Your Detective Gear

  • Detective clipboards with a sheet to record your findings
  • Pencils and crayons for drawing and writing
  • A big sheet of paper for our class computer list
  • The classroom gadgets we’ll be exploring
  • Picture cards to help us identify different computers

How We’ll Know You’re a Super Detective

  • We’ll see how you work with your partner and how many cool computers you can find.
  • Your Mission Report: You’ll draw one computer you found and write one sentence about how it helps people. This will be your “exit ticket” to show what you’ve learned!

Fun for Everyone

  • Want a bigger challenge? Try to find the most surprising or unusual computer in the school.
  • Need a little help? We have picture cards to give you clues, and you can team up with a partner.

Tech Words to Know

  • Computer: A machine that follows instructions to help people solve problems or do tasks.
